Junior Finals & Presentation Day
Bright sunshine greeted the contestants on Sunday 13th September as the Birdies, Eagles and Albatrosses played a number of competitions for the trophies and prizes. Colin Ayre, who was organising the event for the last time, did a great job, ensuring the participants were kept safe during play and also during the prize giving. There was also a putting competition on the practice green before the presentations took place. Helen Grantham, Women’s Vice Captain, thanked the players, organisers and helpers on a successful event and also thanked Will Hughes for being the Junior Captain in this most unusual year.
Will Hughes had a successful day picking up two trophies for having both the best gross and best nett score on the day.
The Birdies 9-Hole Competition was won by Clara Agnew
The Birdies Putting Competition was also won by Clara Agnew
The Eagles 9-Hole Competition was won by Joe Wade
The Eagles Putting Competition was also won by Joe Wade
The Albatrosses 18-Hole Competition was won by Will Hughes
The Albatross Putting Competition was won by Zac Ayre, after a sudden death play-off.
The A C Bradley Trophy for the largest handicap reduction over the course of the season went to Ben Grimmitt following an amazing run of form.
The new Junior Captain will be announced in due course.
Thanks again to Colin for organising the event with the help of Jason Boswell, Junior Team organiser. As mentioned, this is Colin’s last year of doing this, so we are actively seeking a new Junior Organiser. If you are interested in helping, then please get in touch via the office.
Also held on the day was the second Sky Junior European Open Qualifying event with a field of 36 players from Otley and around the rest of the UK. Thanks also to Fred Moghadam from Sky for providing the prizes for the juniors. Junior Captain, Mark Hughes, completed an excellent day by winning the additional prize of qualifying for next the European Junior open event at Low Laithes.
Fred Moghadam, Tournament Director for Sky, said, “It was great to be back at Otley Golf Club for the second time this season. We saw some excellent golf in the beautiful Autumn sunshine. Thanks to all the players and good luck to those that have qualified for the finals in Spain.”
Harrogate Union Seniors Competitions
Otley Golf club was well-represented in the Harrogate Union Seniors' Competitions. The ladies played their competition on Tuesday 8th September at Bedale Golf Club and Morag Wilkinson led a group of seven Otley members to well-placed finishing positions. Morag's 32 points enabled her to finish in seventhe place overall and both Morag and fellow Otley member, Carol Elliott were the only competitiors in the entire field to register a 'two' - well done to all the ladies who made the journey and performed valiently.
There were half a dozen Otley members who made the trip to Romanby on the following day for the Men's competition. Howard Mould finished as the best placed of the Otley members and his 33 points enabled him to finish in 14th place.
Bank Holiday Mixed - Monday 31st August
Bank Holiday Monday at Otley Golf Club saw a full field take part in the 4BBB mixed competition in glorious sunshine. The course had recovered well from the recent deluges and gave a beautiful setting for some tricky pin positions on quick greens. Prize winners were 1st S Fordham and M Warren 40pts, 2nd J Thorpe and B Stockdale 39pts (on countback on final 3 holes), 3rd G Mowat and F Forfar 39pts.
With the agreement of all present a generous contribution was made to the captains’ charity, Otley Action for Older People.
The event was capped off with a lunch for competitors in the lounge where the well spaced tables looked a picture in their newly refurbished surroundings. A little normality in these unusual times. Here’s to many more happy times to come
